Remote ID Enforcement Update from FAA

The FAA has published updated Remote ID enforcement guidance that affects all drone operators. Understanding these changes is crucial for maintaining compliance with current regulations.

As of September 2023, all drones operated under Part 107 must comply with Remote ID requirements. This means your aircraft must either have built-in Remote ID capability or use an approved Remote ID broadcast module.

What Remote ID Means for Operators

Remote ID broadcasts your drone’s identification, location, altitude, and velocity to nearby receivers. This information helps law enforcement and aviation authorities identify UAS operations in real time.

The system is similar to a digital license plate for drones. It doesn’t transmit your personal information, but it does link to your FAA registration, allowing authorities to contact operators when necessary.

Compliance Options Available

Most drones manufactured after September 2022 include built-in Remote ID. Check your manufacturer’s specifications to confirm your aircraft’s compliance status.

For older drones without built-in capability, aftermarket Remote ID modules are available from companies like DroneTag and Dronetag. These modules attach to your aircraft and broadcast the required information via Bluetooth and WiFi.

The third option is flying only at FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs), though these locations are limited and may not be practical for commercial operations.

Enforcement Reality

While enforcement has been gradual, the FAA has begun issuing warnings and citations for non-compliant operations. Protect your Part 107 certificate by ensuring your fleet meets current Remote ID requirements before your next flight.
